The wealthiest 1 percent of the population pay 37 percent of the income tax. But the 10% under them pay 68 percent of the tab. The working poor pay the rest. Proportianately, as in ABILITY to pay, the middle class carries the burden, though they have LESS ability. If bill gates pays 10 mil in tax, its akin to the middle class man paying a penny, whoopie! Per capita, the middle class has the heavier load.

Oh excuse me, the wealthy pay 32%. Typo. Regardless, the statistic crunches were taken from the IRS's 2005 report on tax brackets. This is VERY easy to understand: people pay according to earned bracket. There are LESS people at the top brackets, hence the middle classes make up the bulk of the payers. If you have 100 people and only 2 are wealthy, 98 are not and ALL pay taxes, put together, the 98 will pay the most, even if the 2 individually are paying twice what the individual 98 are.
